Outsource to India buyer guide

India’s major technology hubs for outsourcing

India is not one labour market. Different cities have different concentrations of technology, engineering, corporate operations and business-process talent.

01
Scope before sourcingDefine outcomes, access and acceptance criteria.
02
Evidence before promisesReview relevant work and a paid trial.
03
Controls before credentialsLimit access and document ownership.
04
Milestones before handoffInspect working increments throughout delivery.

Bengaluru

India’s largest technology hub has deep talent across software products, cloud, AI, startups, global capability centres and engineering. Competition for experienced specialists can also be intense.

Hyderabad

Hyderabad has a strong base of global technology and capability centres, enterprise engineering, cloud and product development. It is a major option for larger teams and specialised engineering work.

Pune

Pune combines enterprise software, engineering, automotive technology and services talent. It is often considered for product engineering and long-term development teams.

Chennai

Chennai has substantial IT-services, enterprise, engineering and business-process capacity. It is also a major base for large service providers.

Delhi NCR

Gurugram and Noida support software, consulting, startups, BPO, fintech, ecommerce and corporate operations, with strong access to national business networks.

Mumbai

Mumbai adds a strong financial-services, media and enterprise context alongside technology and consulting talent.

Do not choose a city before choosing the capability

Remote work means the best team may not sit in the best-known hub. Evaluate the actual delivery people, retention, working hours, infrastructure and management practices rather than using city reputation as a proxy for quality.

Consider second-tier cities for specialized or stable teams

India’s outsourcing ecosystem extends beyond the largest metros. Providers in cities such as Ahmedabad, Kochi, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Chandigarh/Mohali and Indore may offer specialized talent or different retention and cost profiles. Judge the delivery environment and actual team rather than assuming a famous hub is always better.

Remote work weakens city as a selection shortcut

Many providers hire nationally. Ask where the assigned people actually work, what connectivity and backup power arrangements exist, how remote devices are secured and whether the contract requires a specific delivery location.

Visit delivery centres only when it answers a real question

For larger contracts, an on-site visit can help a buyer inspect security controls, management depth and working conditions. The visit should verify specific claims rather than serve as a hospitality exercise.

City choice matters less for small remote engagements

When hiring one specialist or a tiny distributed team, individual capability and communication usually matter more than city. Geographic concentration becomes more relevant when the buyer needs large-scale hiring, physical delivery centres or specialized clusters.

Consider travel and meeting practicality

For relationships that require periodic on-site work, direct flight options, local transport and the provider’s actual office location can affect travel burden. This matters more for long-term enterprise relationships than for a short remote engagement.
